Variations of Canasta

Even though the game of Canasta is relatively new, being invented in 1939, several variations have evolved over this time. While this may not seem like a big deal, Canasta players need to keep this in mind whenever they are competing. After all, you cannot be playing one variation of the game while the other players at the table are thinking about another. For the most part, some variations are more popular than others. But even then, you never know what version your competition is going to want to play.

Generally speaking, there are four common variations of Canasta. They include: Classic, Samba, Hand and Foot, and Modern American. To make this even more complicated, within each of these variations there are minor rules changes that can be implemented.

Classic Canasta is the variation that was proposed by the Regency Club to serve as the standard. Although this did not happen, the Classic version of the game is very common.

Samba Canasta features sequences, which the other variations leave out. Obviously, this is something that you need to be aware of when playing Canasta. If you are not aware that sequences are in play, you will find winning to be quite difficult.

In Hand and Foot Canasta, each player has the chance to pick up a second hand after their first one is gone. Once again, this is a major change from each player only having one hand available.

The biggest difference between Modern American Canasta and the other variations is that large bonuses are given for Canastas of aces and sevens.

All in all, be aware that many rules within Canasta variants are optional. This is something that needs to be discussed by each player before game play begins. This way, all players are aware of the variation being played, as well as what rules are being used.
